From today’s Independent article on Eamon Coughlan being made Grand Marshall of the Paddy’s Day Parade.
Above is the photo that accompanied the piece in the paper. And they didn’t even include a funny caption like ‘Coughlan Is Shit At Running’. (edit for Juno: because he’s falling over in the photo, not because I think he was shit back in the day, which it’s painfully obvious that he wasn’t…jesus…)

They couldn’t put a caption like that because it isn’t true. Coughlan was one of the best in the world in his time. He couldn’t be beaten indoors and was 5,OOO metres World champion. He was unlucky to come 4th in the Olympics. He is still the only man over 40 in the country to have run a mile in under 4 minutes. Less of the cheap digs!

in history I think.. certainly no vet has ever covered a mile faster. Like him or no, he’s a genuine world legend.
