HOLY SHIT!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Right, fair enough. It’s a tree stump.

And it looks like a tree stump. That has a vaguely humanoid form. But it’s more recognisable as a lump of firewood than it is the Virgin Mary.

However, if people want to worship it, then who am I to knock them? They obviously have a belief in something that I don’t, and they have the conviction of those beliefs.

What I find strange is the Church’s reaction to the whole affair;

There’s nothing there . . . it’s just a tree . . . you can’t worship a tree.” – local Parish priest.

Surely you can though? Surely as Catholics they believe in creationism? That God created heaven and earth and all things inbetween? Surely a tree is a purer form of God’s handiwork on this planet than anything man made?Or can you only worship golden cricifixes and mummified heads these days?

From the Bible itself:

Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.

Good enough for God, yet not good enough for the Catholic Church. Interesting.

Also take this statement from the local Diocesean spokesman:

“While we do not wish in any way to detract from devotion to Our Lady, we would also wish to avoid anything which might lead to superstition.

Seriously? The church wishes to avoid anything which might lead superstition?

I suppose that it would be a terrible state of affairs were thousands and thousands of people to start believing that a man was born to a virgin, went around Israel walking on water and turning water into wine with the merest flick of his wrist, fed 20,000 people with 2 cod and a sliced pan, was crucified by the Romans, died, and then came back to life.

Oh wait..

You’d think that after the year that the Catholic Church has had in this country, that calling your parishioners stupid and superstitious would be the last thing they’d want to be doing, especially as all these people want to do, for some reason, is have a bit of an old pray.
